JUSTINS HEALTH-BENEFIT
Our son, Justin will be having a heart valve replaced this fall due to a health condition
called aortic stenosis. We
have known about this condition for the past nine years,
having discovered it during a normal sports physical exam before playing football when
starting 7th grade.  The only restrictions this condition placed on him at the time was he
encouraged not to play sports where a coach/team would be after him to "push it a little
further".  He was put on a blood thinner medication that enabled the blood to flow more
easily through the heart. This was done to lessen the work load that was placed on his
heart pumping the extra blood (that leaked back into his heart caused from the faulty
valve) out of his heart.
Each year since being diagnosed, he has had an EKG, an echo, and a chest xray to monitor
how his heart has been developing. The tests also check the leakage around the valve.
This past January, he was told to have his faulty valve replaced with a mechanical one.
Unfortunately, he has limited state health insurance and no disability insurance coverage.
As his wife, Kate, is in tech school full time, she also does not have coverage.  This lack
of insurance will put an extra financial burden on this young couple.  In order to help
them, we will be hosting a benefit at our farm. Any money raised during this event will be
used for medical bills and living expenses for the 6-8 weeks he will be off work
following the surgery.

with the fund-raiser!  We call it
a huge sucess.  We raised over
$30,000 for Justin and Kate.  It
really made us realize what a
special community we live in with
all the support we were shown.
Justin is scheduled for surgery on September 28th, at Mayo hospital in Rochester, MN.
We will keep everyone updated via facebook and this web site.

Justin surgery has officially started his surgery at 9:50 a.m.
As of 1:00 p.m. Justin is out of surgery!
PRAISE THE LORD everything went text book style according to the surgeon.  They are
keeping him in the surgery area for a couple of hours to keep an eye out for any bleeders.
The plan is to take the intubation tube out this evening after they move him to intensive
care.  His surgeon says "by tomorrow morning, he should be up sitting in a chair."
Around 7:30 p.m. they removed the breathing tube from Justin.
He is now sitting up in his bed and chewing on ice chips
November 23, 2009 - After 8 weeks, Justin is officially released to go back
to work.  He had an excellent checkup with his cardiologist today.  He has a 30
pound weight restriction and will be returning to his construction job next
Monday.
